Self – Care: The first steps to your self-care routine
Self – care doesn’t only mean a spa day, one fancy meal or new manicure. It is a routine of good habits, taking care of your body, mind and soul, and checking in with yourself regularly. However, it’s not always easy to spare time for yourself. Most of us are busy with work, friends, social life, or technology, and sometimes we feel guilty about taking some time-out to take care of ourselves.
Self – care actually doesn’t require a lot of time, simple, easy things like going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time everyday can be a part of a self-care routine too. Once you turn these habits into a daily routine, you will definitely feel much better, both physically and mentally.
Let’s explore the very first steps that you can take to build your own self – care routine.
1. Sleep as much as your body needs
Sleep is one of the most important part in your self – care routine. Each person has a different sleeping patterns and needs – some only need 5-6 hours, some need 7-8 hours to be able to function well. Listen to your own body, and act accordingly to what suits you the best.
2. Eat right
Eating the right foods can have tremendous effects on both your mind and body. Healthy food makes you feel good, and help prevent other illnesses. Some of the most amazing self-care foods include blueberries, nuts, broccoli and healthy fat from fish.
3. Spare alone time for yourself – everyday
Just 15-minute of alone time can totally change your life. It can be from waking up a bit earlier, and using that time to make a good breakfast and a cup of tea/coffee. It can also be the time before going to bed, when you can reflect on yourself and let go of any anxiety during the day.
4. Exercise, everyday
Spend at least 30 minutes to do any kind of exercise. Playing any kind of sport, jogging, running, dancing, etc., anything that you like and make you sweat would count. Outdoor exercises are recommended if you have a clean environment nearby
5. Say “No” to others, and “Yes” to yourself
Some days you’re really stressed or overworked, and all you want to do is to go home and take care of yourself – alone. But it’s really hard to say no if your co-workers or friends ask you to hang out. It might be hard, but if you take some time to practice and politely say “No”, you will find yourself more empowered, and have more time to practice self-care
